The Venue
Your venue is most likely the single largest expense of your wedding day. Don't jump in and book the first place you visit. Give a lot of thought to the size of your guest list and the logistics of the day before you book a venue JUST because it has a nice view or is on a lake. Are you going to have enough guests to justify the cost of the large, beautiful venue? Or should the question be... will your guests travel 90 minutes down a winding road to celebrate with you? Will these guests (your grandparents?) leave early because they are worried about driving home in the dark on that winding road? Your venue needs to be wonderful for YOU, but also be welcoming to your guests.
Don't let me mislead you. That view of the mountains, the lake, the sunset... don't sacrifice those! Just make sure you figure out a way to accommodate any concerns. Do you need a party bus or a driver to get guests back to town? Are there hotels close to the venue? Brainstorm any possible drawbacks of the venue and make sure the benefits outweigh them.
I've been to weddings that have had way too many guests for the small venue chosen but I've been to weddings at venues too large for the small crowd. Be honest with yourself (and those financially contributing) about your guest list UP FRONT and it will help avoid arguments later on. The venue should fit the budget AND the guest list. It doesn't make sense to have the largest and newest venue if you can't afford to decorate it to be the wedding of your dreams. As in all of the wedding decisions, remember that you as couple and your marriage commitment is the highlight of the day.
This is a major step in the wedding planning process. Do your homework!
